Seacoast Region

The Seacoast Region is a coastal strip in southeastern New Hampshire featuring beaches, harbors, and seaside towns along the Atlantic Ocean. The area combines rural landscapes with urban centers and offers direct access to the water.

European settlers first arrived in this area during the early 1600s, establishing permanent communities that became the foundation for colonial New Hampshire. The region later developed into an economic center through trade, fishing, and maritime industry.

The region contains ten distinct communities, including Portsmouth with its maritime museums, Dover with its science centers, and Hampton with its entertainment venues.

The region is easy to reach by car along coastal roads and offers several ways to travel between towns. The best time to visit is from late spring through early fall, when weather is mild and attractions are fully open.

An archipelago of four islands sits at the maritime boundary between New Hampshire and Maine and is known for rugged beauty and maritime heritage. This island group is accessible by boat and offers views of a less-visited side of the coast.
