Smith-Ely Mansion

The Smith-Ely Mansion is a two-and-a-half-story brick building with Classical Revival details and a four-columned entrance portico. Its solid brick construction gives the structure a substantial, imposing presence along the historic street.

The mansion was built in 1850 and underwent major changes between 1875 and 1877 with the addition of a verandah and three-story tower. These renovations reflected growing wealth and shifting architectural tastes among well-to-do families of that era.

The mansion shows how wealthy families of the late 1800s decorated and lived in grand homes. The detailed marble fireplaces and carved wooden elements throughout give a real sense of their daily surroundings and tastes.

The mansion is located on West Genesee Street and now operates as a bed and breakfast where visitors can stay overnight. It's best to check access requirements ahead of time since this is a private residence offering guest accommodations rather than a public museum.

Inside, the building preserves original elements from its era such as parquet floors, gold leaf wall coverings, and stained glass windows. These rare materials and craftsmanship techniques still offer an authentic glimpse of 19th-century luxury today.
