Zurich Bog, National Natural Landmark in Arcadia, United States
Zurich Bog is a protected wetland in Wayne County covering approximately 490 acres of sphagnum moss habitat nestled between drumlin hills. The site supports diverse plant life including northern white cedar and black spruce, with its soil containing marl layers from when the area was once an open lake.
The wetland gained protected status in 1957 when Lyman Stuart and the Newark School District donated the land to the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society. This early conservation effort established it as one of the area's recognized natural landmarks.
Scientists have been studying this wetland since the 1800s, exploring its unique plant communities and soil conditions. Today it serves as a living classroom for understanding how bogs function and change over time.
Access to this site requires permission from the Bergen Swamp Society, as the protected area maintains restricted entry to preserve the environment. Contact the managing organization in advance to arrange a visit and learn about the best routes and timing for exploration.
This site displays a rare combination of bog and fen characteristics, making its ecosystem particularly complex and scientifically valuable. The presence of both types of wetland conditions in one place is uncommon in the region.
