Sommerheim Park Archaeological District, Archaeological district in Millcreek Township, Erie County, United States.
Sommerheim Park Archaeological District comprises six archaeological sites positioned along Lake Erie's shoreline in Millcreek Township. The area includes dense woodlands interspersed with former agricultural land, all remaining largely undeveloped to preserve the layout of past settlements.
Archaeological evidence from the Archaic period, spanning from 8000 BCE to 1000 BCE, shows sustained human occupation at these sites. Stone tools and dwelling remains demonstrate that hunter-gatherer groups maintained a long presence along this lake shore.
The sites reflect how Native American groups used this shoreline for fishing and hunting, adapting their activities with the seasons. You can sense this connection to the lake when walking through the wooded areas where these occupations took place.
Research teams from Gannon University regularly conduct field investigations that reveal ongoing archaeological techniques and findings. Expect natural trails through wooded terrain where the ground may be uneven and damp, requiring appropriate footwear.
This is the only Native American settlement area listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the region northwest of Pittsburgh. The designation reflects the exceptional archaeological importance the district holds for understanding early human occupation patterns along the Great Lakes.
