Springfield Municipal Group, Municipal complex in Springfield, Massachusetts.
The Springfield Municipal Group is an administrative complex in Springfield, Massachusetts, composed of three connected buildings serving city government functions. The ensemble includes City Hall, Symphony Hall with Greek Revival details, and a tall clock tower that anchors the downtown skyline.
Following a fire that destroyed the original City Hall in 1905, architect Harvey Wiley Corbett designed this complex, which was completed in 1913. The ensemble was built as part of Springfield's reconstruction efforts after the disaster.
Symphony Hall, with its 2,611 seats, serves as the main venue for the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and hosts Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.
The three buildings are easily accessible on foot and directly connected to each other in the downtown area. Visitors can explore the grounds during the day and walk around the complex to view the architecture and surrounding plaza.
The clock tower top contains twelve bells that ring melodies from Handel's Messiah throughout the day at regular intervals. This carillon system remains an unusual feature in most American downtowns.
