St. Agnes Chapel, Episcopal church in Upper West Side, Manhattan, US.
St. Agnes Chapel is a stone church building located between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues on West 91st Street in Manhattan. The structure features limestone walls with carved stone details and Gothic Revival architectural elements throughout its design.
The chapel was completed in 1892 following a design competition held by Trinity Corporation for the congregation it would serve. The church closed in 1934, after which the property changed hands and gained a new purpose.
The chapel served as a gathering place for the upper West Side community, drawing people who appreciated its careful craftsmanship and spiritual purpose. The fine architectural details reflected the values and resources of those who worshipped within its walls.
The chapel is no longer open to the public as it now serves as part of a school facility. Visitors can view the exterior architecture and stonework from the surrounding streets, particularly from West 91st Street.
In the 1940s, the building was converted into a gymnasium when the school took over the property. This transformation preserved the historic structure while giving it a completely different role in daily school life.
