The Belnord, Renaissance Revival apartment building in Upper West Side, United States.
The Belnord is a Renaissance Revival apartment building on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, occupying a full city block between Broadway and West End Avenue along 86th Street. It is one of the largest residential structures of its kind in New York City, with a private inner courtyard at its center.
The building was completed in 1908, designed by the firm Hiss and Weekes, and was one of the first large residential complexes to shape the character of the Upper West Side. It fell into disrepair during parts of the 20th century before being renovated and converted into condominiums in the 1990s.
The Belnord has appeared in several well-known television productions, including "Seinfeld" and "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", making its facade recognizable to many viewers. Fans of these shows often stop on the sidewalk to photograph the ornate entrance gates.
The Belnord is a private residential building, so the inner courtyard is not open to visitors. The decorated facade and iron entrance gates are best seen from the corner of Broadway and 86th Street, where you get a full view of the building's width.
The entrance gates are made of gilded wrought iron and decorated with original frescoes and Arabic-inspired ornaments that date back to when the building first opened. These details are visible from the street and reward a close look, since they are rarely found in such good condition on buildings of this age.
