St. Ambrose Church, Religious compound in Saint Nazianz, Wisconsin, United States.
St. Ambrose Church is a Gothic Revival brick building from 1898 located within a former religious complex in rural Wisconsin. The interior features high ceilings and large stained glass windows that can be glimpsed through the weathered exterior walls.
The church grew from a 1854 German Catholic settlement founded by Father Ambrose Oschwald, who brought his congregation to Wisconsin to escape religious persecution. The brick structure was built in 1898 and later served as a seminary and school before closing in 1982.
The church was built by German-speaking Catholics who maintained their traditions and language within this close-knit religious settlement. Visitors can still see German inscriptions and religious symbols throughout the building that reflect this heritage.
The building is heavily deteriorated and opens for limited visits only during warm summer months, as the current management works to stabilize the structure. Visitors should prepare for rough interior conditions, as sections remain unfinished and unsecured.
Father Oschwald, the founder, was entombed in a hillside crypt behind the property and displayed unusual preservation after death. His body maintained lifelike features for an extended period, making him a notable figure in local lore.
