St. John's Catholic Church, Catholic church building in Bangor, US

St. John's Catholic Church is a brick Gothic Revival church building in Bangor, Maine, with a tall slate-covered spire and pointed arch windows. The building has stone buttresses along its sides and a long interior space with small side chapels, decorative capitals, and a large pipe organ from 1860.

Construction began in 1855 and finished the following year, led by Irish-born architect Patrick Charles Keely. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and its steeple received major repairs completed in 2019 to fix water damage and cracking brickwork.

The building sits close to the center of Bangor and is still a working place of worship, with weekly services and parish gatherings that bring together families from across the city. The pipe organ is occasionally played during services, and its older sound has become a familiar part of local religious life.

When you approach from York Street, the tall tower is easy to spot from several blocks away, so use it as a landmark if you are walking around the center. The front entrance is on the street side, and the surrounding sidewalk is flat, making it simple to walk around the outside and view the brickwork.

A credit union was started in the church basement in 1956 by Dennis Soucy, a former Bangor mayor, and later grew into Bangor Federal Credit Union. The organ inside is one of a very small number of its kind still in use, restored in 1981.
