Bangor, Administrative center in Penobscot County, Maine, United States
Bangor sits along the Penobscot River at 36 meters elevation with around 32,000 inhabitants and forms the third largest center in Maine. The town spreads over several banks with residential neighborhoods, parks and business streets near the water.
The settlement started in 1791 under the name Kenduskeag Plantation and later took its name from a Welsh hymn tune. During the 19th century it grew into the largest lumber port worldwide with sawmills along the river.
The public library inspired author Stephen King, who was born here and still lives in town. His residence and readings draw fans from several continents.
The airport serves both commercial flights and National Guard units and sits at the city edge with connections to main roads. Downtown can be explored on foot and offers public parking at several spots.
Mount Hope Cemetery, laid out in 1834, ranks among the oldest garden cemeteries in North America and shows monumental gravestones from the lumber port era. The burial sites reflect the wealth of traders and sawmill owners who worked here during the 19th century.
