Orono Bog, National Natural Landmark in Bangor Forest, Maine, US.
Orono Bog is a National Natural Landmark featuring a one-mile boardwalk loop that passes through diverse zones from forested wetlands to an open peat moss center. The pathway allows visitors to walk through all parts of the bog on solid ground.
The boardwalk project started in 2003 through a partnership between the University of Maine, the City of Bangor, and the Orono Land Trust. This collaboration opened access to the bog for public education.
Information boards throughout the path teach visitors about the northern sphagnum bog ecosystem, plant species, and local wildlife living here.
The boardwalk is wheelchair-accessible and has benches along the way for resting. Spring through November is the main season to visit, with seasonal guided walks available.
The bog formed in a glacial depression and now serves as a natural laboratory for studying peatlands and how they store carbon. Research happening here contributes to climate science.
