Bangor Public Library, Public library in Bangor, Maine, US
Bangor Public Library is a public library housed in a stone building in Bangor, Maine, designed by the architectural firm Peabody and Stearns. The collection covers books, periodicals, and digital materials, all open to the public.
The original building was destroyed by a fire in 1911, and most of the books were lost with it. The library reopened at this location with a much smaller collection and rebuilt its holdings over time.
The library regularly displays works by local artists in its rooms, so visitors can get a sense of the creative life of the region. These exhibitions change throughout the year and can be spotted while browsing the collections.
Maine residents can get a free library card that opens access to physical materials and online resources. Visitors from out of state are welcome to use the building, though some services may be limited to cardholders.
Inside the building stands a sofa where former US Vice President Hannibal Hamlin spent his final moments during a card game. This unexpected object connects the library to one of the more overlooked figures in 19th-century American politics.
