Bangor Public Library, Public library in Bangor, Maine, US
Bangor Public Library is a stone building designed by the Peabody and Stearns architectural firm and currently houses over 520,000 items in its collection. The structure contains books, periodicals, and digital materials available for visitors to access and use.
The original building was destroyed in a major fire in 1911, resulting in the loss of most of its books. The library later reopened at this location with a much smaller collection before gradually rebuilding its holdings.
The library regularly displays works by local artists throughout its rooms, creating a space where the region's creative work is visible to visitors. You can encounter these exhibitions while browsing the collections and get a sense of the artistic life happening in town.
The library issues free cards to Maine residents, giving them access to a range of resources throughout the year. This card opens doors to physical materials, online content, and other services available to cardholders.
Inside the building is a historical sofa where former US Vice President Hannibal Hamlin spent his final moments during a card game. This unexpected artifact connects the library to a notable figure from American history.
