Bangor Children's Home, Children's welfare organization in Bangor, Maine
Bangor Children's Home is a brick building at 218 Ohio Street featuring a three-story structure topped with a mansard roof and set on a granite foundation. The building houses spaces for education and childcare services within its distinctive architecture.
The institution was founded in 1839 as Bangor Female Orphan Asylum to serve orphaned girls in the region. It later expanded its mission and continued operating in this role until transforming into a modern education and care center in 1975.
The home became known in the community as a place where children without families found care and education. Walking by today, people recognize it as a symbol of long-standing commitment to youth welfare in Bangor.
The building remains in active use as an education and childcare facility and is not open for public tours. Visitors can appreciate the exterior architecture and design from the street, noting its place in the community.
The current building was made possible through Franklin Pitcher's generous financial support and was designed by architect Henry W. Hartwell in the Stick style. This architectural choice makes the building a noteworthy example of late 19th-century American design.
