St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church
St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lutheran church in Livingston, Columbia County, New York.
St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church is a brick church building in Livingston, Columbia County, New York, constructed with a steep pitched gable roof and two towers of different heights in Late Gothic Revival style. The structure rises from a high basement level and features a deep bracketed cornice along its exterior.
The church was built between 1901 and 1902 according to designs by architect Samuel L. Klingman and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. This recognition honors the building's architectural importance and its historical value to the region.
The adjacent cemetery has been in use since 1821 and shows the deep connection between the Lutheran congregation and the local community across many generations. The burial grounds tell the story of people who shaped this region over time.
The church complex occupies about 5 acres and includes the main building alongside a cemetery with many old gravestones worth exploring. The site is best visited during daylight hours when you can see the architecture and grounds clearly.
The church facade features an unusual three-part pointed arch window with a semi-engaged tower positioned in the center bay, a distinctive architectural choice not seen in many similar buildings. This central tower placement draws attention and sets the building apart from typical church designs of the period.
