Southwestern College, college in Kansas
Southwestern College is a private, not-for-profit college in Winfield, Kansas, set on a campus surrounded by rural countryside. It offers bachelor's and master's degrees across a range of fields, and also grants a doctorate in education.
The college was founded in 1885 by the Methodist Church, which chose Winfield as its location after a selection process. The first class graduated in 1889, and the school took its current name in 1909.
The college goes by the nickname "Moundbuilders," a tradition that started in 1927 when students, staff, and visitors began painting rocks and stacking them into a growing pile on campus. The mound is still visible today and serves as a shared landmark that connects generations of students.
The campus is in the small rural town of Winfield, and a car is the most convenient way to get there, though Wichita is close enough to make the trip straightforward. Once on campus, visitors can move around on foot, as the grounds are compact and easy to navigate.
Every student at the college receives a personal laptop for the full duration of their studies, which they are not required to return. This means that from day one, all students have the same access to digital tools, regardless of their background.
