Springs Mills Building

Springs Mills Building, Office skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan, US

Springs Mills Building is an office tower in Midtown Manhattan featuring a distinctive hexagonal glass design. The structure rises 21 stories and sits on a corner lot bounded by 40th and 39th Streets, creating its angular architectural form.

The structure was completed between 1961 and 1963 by architects Harrison & Abramovitz and originally housed textile manufacturers including Springs Mills Corporation. Its construction occurred during a period when New York was reshaping its skyline with modern office towers.

The building displays the International Style approach of the 1960s as it appeared in New York's business districts. Its glass facade and clean form shaped the cityscape and show how architects of that era designed modern office spaces.

The building is located in the business district with convenient access to multiple subway lines and nearby transportation options. As a private office building, visitor access is limited, but the exterior facade and overall appearance can be viewed from the street.

The L-shaped lot enabled an unconventional hexagonal form that met zoning requirements while allowing maximum natural light into the interior. This architectural solution demonstrates how designers of that era converted constraints into creative forms.
