Bush Tower, Historic skyscraper at 130 West 42nd Street in Manhattan, United States
Bush Tower is a skyscraper in Manhattan rising 433 feet (132 meters) between Broadway and Sixth Avenue in Midtown. The building displays Neo-Gothic design with brick facades featuring vertical ribs that create a unified pattern across its exterior.
Built between 1916 and 1918 for Irving T. Bush's Terminal Company, the structure was among the first erected following the 1916 Zoning Resolution. Its completion marked a turning point in how tall buildings shaped Manhattan's evolving skyline.
The building originally functioned as a marketplace where manufacturers displayed and sold their goods to visitors. The lower floors housed a buyer's club for traveling merchants and business people.
The building is centrally located on 42nd Street between Broadway and Sixth Avenue, easily reached by subway or on foot. Access for visitors may be limited since the structure primarily contains office spaces and operates mainly as a private commercial property.
The brick facade was created using an optical illusion technique where vertical ribs suggest depth and movement across the surface. This subtle design method helped make the large structure appear lighter and less massive than its actual proportions.
