Springside

Springside is a Gothic Revival estate in Poughkeepsie that includes several preserved structures built in the 1800s. The main building on the property is the gatehouse, which displays steep roofs and pointed arches along with detailed wooden elements typical of this architectural style.

Andrew Jackson Downing designed this property in the 1850s for Matthew Vassar, founder of Vassar College, representing important thinking about American residential design of that period. The main house was never built, but the gatehouse and landscape design remain as Downing's vision took partial form.

The relationship between the buildings and the surrounding landscape reflects how people in the 1800s valued the connection between home and nature. The way structures integrate with the grounds shows what mattered to wealthy residents of that era.
