Academy Street Historic District, Historical residential district in Poughkeepsie, United States.
Academy Street Historic District contains residential buildings in Victorian, Greek Revival, and Second Empire styles arranged across four city blocks. Most buildings stand between two and three and a half stories tall, positioned between Livingston Street and Montgomery Street.
The area developed from a farm into one of Poughkeepsie's first planned residential neighborhoods starting in 1836. Several well-known architects designed homes here between 1825 and 1949, shaping its character as a prosperous residential area.
The street's name comes from a nearby academy that once served the community, and it became a neighborhood for successful families. Visitors today can see how these different architectural styles sit side by side, showing the area's prosperous past.
Good sidewalks make it easy for visitors to walk through and explore the street and its houses. The district sits close to Poughkeepsie's downtown commercial area, which keeps access simple.
The northern side holds smaller homes from earlier times, while the southern end displays the largest houses on expansive lots. This contrast shows how the neighborhood's wealth developed over time.
