Squadron A Armory, Military armory in Manhattan, United States.
Squadron A Armory is a military building on Madison Avenue in Manhattan with red brick walls, sturdy construction, and two crenellated towers rising prominently. The structure displays the solid, fortress-like design typical of cavalry facilities from the late 1800s.
The building was designed in 1895 by architect John R. Thomas for Squadron A, a cavalry unit descended from the First New York Hussars. The structure reflects New York's military past through its original purpose and architectural approach.
The Madison Avenue facade received protection from the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, preserving the architectural elements of late 19th century military structures.
Part of the property is publicly accessible as it forms the boundary wall of the Intermediate School 29 playground area. The eastern section is occupied by Hunter College schools and can be viewed from the street.
The building once contained approximately 100 horse stalls during its military service, revealing the cavalry traditions of the original Squadron A unit. This unit later evolved into the 105th Machine Gun Battalion.
