St. Paul's School

St. Paul's School is a brick school building in Gothic Revival style with roughly 500 rooms, a prominent clock tower, and an extensive chapel complex. The structure contains classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and dining halls spread across the 48-acre property.

Cornelia Stewart founded the school in 1879 as a memorial to her late husband Alexander Turney Stewart, who established Garden City. It later shifted from a military institution to a college preparatory academy focused on academic and physical education.

The school served as a place for rigorous physical training and character building, which still shows in how the buildings and grounds are arranged. The spaces were designed to reflect these educational priorities.

The building is located on Stewart Avenue and is currently closed to visitors while decisions about its future use are being discussed. Check ahead before planning a visit, as conditions may change based on ongoing planning efforts.

A notable former student, William Bradford Turner, received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery during World War I. This decoration highlights the lasting impact the school had on shaping its graduates.
