Stokesville Observatory

Stokesville Observatory is an astronomical facility in Mount Solon featuring a 14-inch telescope housed under a motorized dome. The building is surrounded by eight additional observation piers that allow multiple visitors to explore the sky at the same time.

James Madison University took over management of the facility to support astronomical research and education in the region. This move helped establish a center for serious stargazing and learning for the Shenandoah Valley community.

Local astronomy clubs gather here regularly to observe the night sky together and share their knowledge with visitors. The place functions as a meeting point for people passionate about stars and space exploration.

Plan visits for clear nights when cloud cover will not block observations from the telescopes. It helps to check in advance when observing sessions are scheduled and dress warmly, since evening temperatures can drop considerably.

The facility includes a dedicated educational room filled with astronomy displays and teaching materials. This space allows visitors to learn about the universe beyond just looking through the telescopes.
