Shenandoah Mountain, Mountain summit in George Washington National Forest, United States.
Description
Shenandoah Mountain is a sandstone ridge that stretches about 73 miles across Virginia and West Virginia with several peaks along its crest. The ridge drops steeply on both sides and is covered with thick forest throughout its length.
History
During the Civil War, the ridge served as a strategic location where armies used high ground to watch and control movements across the Shenandoah Valley. Both sides recognized its value as a natural fortress and observation post.
Culture
The mountain's name comes from the Shawnee people and reflects the region's indigenous roots. Local communities and visitors use these forests today for hunting and hiking, keeping outdoor traditions alive.
Practical
The ridge is easily reached from U.S. Route 33, which crosses between Franklin, West Virginia and Harrisonburg, Virginia. Hikers will find multiple trail options along this corridor with varying difficulty levels.
