General John Brahan, a War of 1812 veteran, built this residence in 1835 for his daughter and son-in-law Robert Patton, who would later become Governor of Alabama. The structure dates to the antebellum period and experienced major shifts in use during the Civil War years.

The name comes from a freshwater spring nearby that once supplied the household and held importance for the family's daily life. This local connection shaped how the place was understood by those who lived and worked there.
