Wesleyan Hall, Gothic Revival university building in Florence, Alabama.
Wesleyan Hall is a stone university building on the University of North Alabama campus that displays Gothic Revival architectural features. It features pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and a prominent observatory tower that stands above the surrounding structures.
The building began as LaGrange College and later became known as Florence Wesleyan University before evolving into its current institution. During the Civil War, it served as a military base for Union General William Sherman and later for Confederate General John Bell Hood.
The building shows how higher education developed in Alabama and reflects the institution's transformation from its founding through to its present form.
The building is straightforward to locate on campus and the surrounding area is easy to navigate. Visitors should check in advance about public access to interior spaces, as it remains an active university facility.
The Wesleyan Bell, a historic bell, was stored for nearly 100 years before being moved to the Smith Bell Tower next to the building in 2004. It now stands as a visible reminder of the site's long past.
