Wilson Dam, Hydroelectric dam on Tennessee River, Alabama, United States
Wilson Dam is a hydroelectric structure spanning the Tennessee River between Lauderdale and Colbert counties in Alabama. The dam features 58 spillway gates for controlling water flow and creates a large reservoir behind its concrete wall.
The United States Army Corps of Engineers built the dam between 1918 and 1924 to address growing energy needs and flooding control. This project marked an early federal effort in large-scale hydroelectric development and shaped water management practices in the Tennessee River valley.
The dam received National Historic Landmark status in 1966 for its role as the first dam under Tennessee Valley Authority administration.
The dam can be viewed from several vantage points, and walking along its length provides views of the lake and surrounding landscape. Visit during warmer months when recreational activities on the water are most active.
The main lock at the dam is among the highest east of the Rocky Mountains, allowing larger vessels to travel up and down the river. This engineering allowed commercial shipping to thrive on the Tennessee River and continues to move cargo today.
