Swiss Pines, Botanical garden in Malvern, United States
Swiss Pines is a 19-acre botanical garden featuring Japanese landscape design elements including a tea house, stone gardens, streams, and a lake. The property also contains specialized horticultural areas dedicated to azaleas, medicinal and culinary herbs, and coniferous trees.
Arnold Bartschi, a Swiss immigrant, purchased the Llewellyn estate and established Swiss Pines in 1957. The property transformed into a nonprofit foundation in 1960 to preserve the gardens.
The garden blends Japanese design traditions with Western horticultural practices in its layout. Visitors encounter tea house structures, stone pathways, and water features that function as gathering and meditation spaces within the broader landscape.
The grounds are navigable on foot with multiple pathways winding through gardens and around the lake. Public access has improved since Charlestown Township acquired the property in 2023 after a period when it was closed to visitors.
The property holds more than 150 azalea varieties within a dedicated garden section along with over 200 types of coniferous trees throughout the grounds. An herb garden featuring around 100 species adds another layer of plant diversity that many visitors miss.
