Swan Boats, Boat attraction in Public Garden, Boston, US
The Swan Boats are six pedal-powered pontoon boats with white fiberglass swans mounted on them, operating on the lagoon in the Public Garden. Each vessel features pedal seats that propel the boats through the water while passengers enjoy the ride.
Robert Paget created the Swan Boats in 1877, inspired by the opera Lohengrin. He blended bicycle mechanics with a swan theme to invent an entirely new kind of recreational boat experience.
The Swan Boats have become part of Boston's cultural identity and appear in children's literature. Locals view them as a symbol of summer leisure and connection to the Public Garden's peaceful character.
Rides last about 15 minutes and operate from April through September when the weather is warmest. The Public Garden is easy to reach on foot, and the setting provides a relaxing experience for all visitors.
The oldest boat in the active fleet dates to 1910 and has never undergone major changes. It still uses a traditional rope and pulley steering system connected to the rudder, maintaining its original design.
