Statue of Charles Sumner, Bronze statue in Public Garden, Boston, United States.
The bronze statue stands over life-size, depicting Senator Charles Sumner holding papers in his left hand while making a gesture with his right hand.
The Boston Art Committee commissioned sculptor Thomas Ball to create this memorial after Sumner's death in 1874, with the statue being dedicated in December 1878.
The statue reflects the complex story of 19th-century art competitions, as the original winning design by Anne Whitney was rejected when her gender was discovered.
Visitors can find the statue in Boston's Public Garden, where it forms part of the park's collection of outdoor sculptures and monuments.
President Ulysses Grant reportedly encountered multiple Sumner statues during his 1878 visit to Florence, where he found Ball working on this particular piece.
