Swanquarter National Wildlife Refuge, National Wildlife Refuge in Hyde County, North Carolina
Swanquarter National Wildlife Refuge is a coastal protection area covering more than 16,000 acres of brackish marsh and forested wetlands along the northern shore of Pamlico Sound. Water channels wind through the landscape, creating habitats where numerous bird and animal species thrive.
This refuge was established in 1932 as a protected space for migratory birds and other wildlife. The creation reflects early efforts to preserve coastal wetlands across the country.
Fishing and crabbing are common activities here, with the Bell Island Pier serving as a gathering place for people who spend time on the water. These practices reflect how the local community has traditionally used this coastal area.
The refuge can be reached via a gravel road from NC Highway 264 or by boat, both requiring some planning. Visitors should prepare for remote conditions and bring supplies, as services nearby are minimal.
A large portion of the refuge remains completely undeveloped, allowing black bears, alligators, and deer to live without human disturbance. These wild zones make it one of the few places on the East Coast where you can find true wilderness.
