Terre Haute Post Office and Federal Building
Terre Haute Post Office and Federal Building, Art Deco federal building in Terre Haute, United States.
Terre Haute Post Office and Federal Building is an Art Deco structure featuring geometric shapes, ornate details, and a symmetrical facade constructed from limestone and granite. The design displays typical characteristics of this style with clean lines and decorative elements that enliven the exterior surfaces.
The building was constructed in 1934 during Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidency and replaced an original 1887 structure on the same site. This new creation was part of the federal initiative to modernize public buildings during the Great Depression.
A notable mural by Frederick Webb Ross depicting The Signing of the Magna Carta adorns the federal courtroom walls inside. This artwork remains part of the daily surroundings for university users today and connects the space to its original civic purpose.
The building now houses Indiana State University's Scott College of Business following a comprehensive renovation. Interior spaces are accessible during university hours and display restored Art Deco details alongside modern academic facilities.
Columns and the pediment from the original 1887 post office were preserved and now stand at the Chauncey Rose Memorial in Fairbanks Park. These relics connect the history of both structures at different locations across the city.
