The Green

The Green is a central open area at Dartmouth College featuring symmetrical pathways, expansive grass, and mature trees arranged in an orderly design. Benches and tables are scattered throughout to create spaces for sitting and gathering.

The space has been central to Dartmouth College since its founding in 1769. It marks the original location where the college began and continues as the campus core.

Students and faculty gather here throughout the year for graduation ceremonies, outdoor performances, and campus celebrations. The space serves as the heart of student life and community events.

The area is open and accessible throughout the day without restrictions. Comfortable walking shoes work well since paths crisscross the grounds in all directions.

During winter, the grounds become a temporary sculpture park where students create snow art as part of the Winter Carnival tradition. This annual event transforms the familiar landscape into something fresh and unexpected.
