The Hermitage, Gothic Revival house in Ho-Ho-Kus, US.
The Hermitage is a residence in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey. The building shows wood-shingled roofs, pointed gables, and carved window frames typical of a mid-century makeover.
In the 1770s, Theodosia Bartow Prevost lived here before marrying Aaron Burr. An architect from New York remodeled the building in the 1840s in the new Gothic style.
This estate takes its name from a European tradition of naming country retreats after places of solitude. Visitors today notice how the pointed arches and decorative trim transformed what had been a simpler farmhouse into a fashionable residence.
This building now operates as a museum run by a nonprofit organization. Guided tours show the interior rooms and explain how well-off families lived in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Several prominent figures from the Revolutionary era visited this site, including a future president and two leading political rivals. The grounds were once much larger and included farmland that has since disappeared.
