The Pierre, Luxury hotel in Upper East Side, Manhattan, US
The Pierre is a luxury hotel at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and East 61st Street in Manhattan, rising 160 meters (525 feet) across 41 floors with direct views of Central Park. The property offers 189 accommodations in different room categories and suites distributed across multiple floors.
The building opened in 1930 following plans by architecture firm Schultze & Weaver, known for their classical style in New York hotel architecture. Oil magnate J. Paul Getty purchased the property eight years later for 2.35 million dollars, bringing it under new ownership.
The hotel displays its name on the exterior facade with copper-colored lettering that catches sunlight and helps with recognition. Guests enter through the main Fifth Avenue entrance, while the staircase leading to the lobby features geometric patterns in Art Deco style.
The reception accepts pets up to 6.8 kilograms (15 pounds) that must be registered upon arrival. Room service operates daily between 7 AM and 11 PM, allowing orders to be placed during that window.
In January 1972, members of the Lucchese crime family carried out a robbery taking roughly 27 million dollars from safes and hotel rooms. The incident remains the largest hotel theft in history and lasted less than two hours.
