The Yards

The Yards is an urban park situated along the Anacostia River in Washington, D.C., featuring a boardwalk that connects gardens, lawns, and water elements across roughly 5.4 acres. The layout guides visitors through different sections as they move through the grounds.

The site was part of naval operations during World War I and served shipbuilding and military production until the 1960s. After this industrial period ended, the land was redeveloped into a public gathering space.

The space serves as a gathering place where people come together for outdoor events and leisure throughout the seasons. Visitors walk the paths, spread out on the lawns, and spend time taking in the river views.

The park is accessible by foot from the city center and has level pathways that are easy to navigate throughout. Seating areas and shaded spots are scattered across the grounds for resting during your visit.

A 60-foot light tower artwork stands in the park and produces different light patterns depending on the time of day using reflective surfaces. This structure serves as a visual landmark that shifts its appearance from morning through night.
