Three College Observatory

Three College Observatory is an astronomical facility in Graham housing a large Cassegrain reflecting telescope with exceptional light-gathering capability. The site includes a 24-foot dome structure, darkroom facilities, and classroom spaces designed for observation and education.

The facility was established in 1981 through a collaborative partnership between three universities: UNC Greensboro, North Carolina A&T State University, and Guilford College. This shared arrangement enabled the institutions to pool resources and provide astronomical access to their academic communities.

The observatory welcomes 1,000 visitors annually, including students, amateur astronomers, school groups, and local residents for astronomical observations.

The site is located in a rural setting and is best accessed by car since public transportation is unavailable. Visitors should check ahead for open observation nights and available hours, as access is limited to scheduled events.

The telescope here is the largest in North Carolina and ranks among the most powerful instruments in the southeastern United States. Its scale makes it noteworthy for amateur astronomers and school groups throughout the region.
