Truman State University is a public institution in Kirksville in northeast Missouri, founded in the 19th century. The campus covers roughly 210 acres (85 hectares) and clusters around a central quad, where Pickler Memorial Library and Kirk Memorial stand.
The institution began in 1867 as North Missouri Normal and Commercial School, training teachers for the region. Its current name was adopted in 1996 to honor President Harry S Truman, a Missouri native.
Students organize themselves into numerous clubs and associations, with roughly one fifth of the community active in fraternities and sororities. Six chapters for women and ten for men shape the social life across campus.
