Umberto's Clam House, Seafood restaurant in Little Italy, Manhattan, US
Umberto's Clam House is an Italian seafood restaurant in Little Italy on Mulberry Street. The establishment prepares clams, squid and shellfish in an open kitchen so guests can watch the food being made.
The Ianniello family opened the place in 1972 on Mulberry Street and later changed location several times within the same block. The current address has been in use since 2010 and sits further south in the same neighborhood.
The restaurant takes its name from Umberto Ianniello and his descendants continue to run the place in the style of Neapolitan kitchen traditions. Guests from Little Italy regularly stop by and enjoy dishes based on family recipes from southern Italy.
The kitchen opens at lunchtime and closes in the evening depending on the day of the week between 10 PM and 11 PM. Reservations can be useful for evening hours when many guests are expected.
A shooting took place in April 1972 at the original location during a birthday party for gangster Joe Gallo. This incident brought the place nationwide attention and was later mentioned in films and books.
