Universalist-Unitarian Church
Universalist-Unitarian Church, Religious landmark in Waterville, United States.
The Universalist-Unitarian Church is a 19th-century house of worship in Waterville featuring a mix of Federal and Gothic Revival architectural styles. Its most distinctive element is a two-stage square tower topped with an octagonal belfry and clock.
This congregation of Universalists was established in 1826, and the church building itself was constructed in 1832. The structure earned recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
The congregation gathers here for worship and community events that reflect values of social engagement and mutual support. Visitors can sense how the space continues to serve as a gathering place for local initiatives.
The building sits at the corner of Silver Street and Elm Street in downtown Waterville, making it easy to locate and access. Inside, multiple rooms including the Averill Parlors in the basement provide spaces for different types of gatherings.
The bell tower underwent a complete reconstruction in 2008 after structural problems forced the removal and sale of the original tower. This restoration demonstrates how the building has been preserved and adapted over time.
