Valley City State University, public university in North Dakota
Valley City State University is a public institution in North Dakota offering more than 65 academic programs at undergraduate, graduate, and online levels. The campus spans about 55 acres alongside a forested hillside and near the Sheyenne River, with a mix of historic brick buildings and modern facilities including a new arts center and athletic spaces.
The institution was founded in 1890 as Valley City State Normal School for teacher training and received the right to award bachelor's degrees in 1921. It grew from 35 students under George A. McFarland's leadership into an institution serving over 1,300 students.
The university's Vikings identity shapes how students connect and celebrate together on campus. Sports teams, traditions, and community events revolve around this shared spirit that visitors can sense when walking through.
Visitors are encouraged to take a campus tour where they can meet faculty and explore different areas of study. Tours provide a good overview of student life and the various facilities available on the grounds.
A notable footbridge connects the campus to town, originally built of wood in 1892 and replaced with a suspension bridge in 1901. This bridge has been regularly maintained over more than 120 years and remains a distinctive feature at the campus entrance.
