WECT tower, Television tower in Bladen County, North Carolina, US
The WECT tower was a television broadcasting structure in Bladen County, North Carolina, standing around 2,000 feet (610 m) tall and transmitting signals across the southeastern part of the state. The structure stood on a large property that housed all the technical equipment needed for the station's daily operations.
The tower was built in 1969 and served the region as a key broadcast structure for several decades. Transmissions ended in 2008, and the tower remained in place for a few more years before being removed.
For decades, the station brought local and national television programming to households across southeastern North Carolina. Communities throughout the region depended on its signal to receive local news and weather updates.
The property was never open to visitors and was operated as a restricted technical facility. The tower was demolished in 2012, so there is nothing left to see on site today.
Before demolition, the property was donated to the Green Beret Foundation in 2011, an organization supporting former US Army special forces soldiers. The controlled demolition carried out in 2012 was the final step in closing down a facility that had been part of the region's broadcast landscape for over 40 years.
