Lake Waccamaw State Park, State park in Columbus County, United States.
Lake Waccamaw State Park is a protected area covering about 2,400 acres along the shore of North Carolina's largest Carolina bay, with limestone bluffs and natural walking trails. The property offers various recreational options including boat ramps for water activities and camping facilities with modern amenities.
The park was established in 1976 to protect one of approximately 500,000 Carolina bays, which scientists identified as thermokarst lakes formed during ancient permafrost periods. This geological feature makes the lake a valuable location for studying Ice Age landscape history.
The visitor center displays educational exhibits about local ecosystems and geological features that shape the park's environment. Programs held here help guests understand how the landscape formed and what lives in it.
The park has more than 10 miles (16 km) of hiking trails varying in difficulty to suit both beginners and experienced walkers. The boat ramps and camping areas are well-maintained and convenient if you plan to stay multiple days or visit with family.
The limestone base of the lake creates water conditions that support several plant and animal species found only at this location in the world. These rare organisms make it a valuable destination for nature enthusiasts and researchers alike.
