Wabash Bridge, Railway bridge across Missouri River in St. Louis County and St. Charles County, United States.
The Wabash Bridge is a railway crossing spanning the Missouri River between St. Louis County and St. Charles County. The structure features cantilever and truss construction designed to carry freight trains on a single track.
The structure replaced an older bridge built in 1871 that was prone to accidents, including a steamboat collision with its support piers. The current bridge was constructed in 1936 by American Bridge Company and Mt. Vernon Bridge Company.
The bridge represents the evolution of American railroad infrastructure, connecting communities and supporting regional economic development through rail transportation.
The bridge carries only freight trains operated by Norfolk Southern Railway and receives regular maintenance work. Deck renovation efforts have been ongoing since 2016 to keep the structure sound.
At low water levels, remains of the Montana steamboat become visible near the St. Louis County shore. This vessel struck a support pier of the original bridge in 1884.
