Weequahic Park

Weequahic Park is a 311-acre urban park in Newark with an 80-acre lake at its center. The grounds contain sports fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, and various recreation facilities spread across landscaped areas.

The Essex County Park Commission established the site in 1896 as Weequahic Reservation. It expanded to about 265 acres by 1899 and became a major recreational area for the region.

The name comes from a Lenni-Lenape word meaning 'head of the cove' and represents the historical boundary between two Native American territories. Walking through today, visitors encounter landscape that echoes this indigenous heritage.

The park is easy to reach from the Elizabeth Avenue and Meeker Avenue intersection. A rubberized loop trail about 2.2 miles long circles the lake and works well for walking and running.

Dividend Hill within the park was where founders of Newark and Elizabeth met in 1668 to establish boundaries between their settlements. This historic landmark remains a quiet witness to these early boundary negotiations.
