Western Reserve Academy, University-preparatory school in Hudson, United States
This institution is a preparatory school in Hudson, Ohio. The campus includes lawns, sports fields, and dozens of buildings from different periods, among them classrooms and homes for teaching staff.
The school opened in 1826 following the example of Yale and used Greek Revival style in the first seven structures along Brick Row. Over time more buildings were added, including an observatory from the founding era that shows European influence.
The design follows European university models, visible in symmetrical facades and columns from the early nineteenth century. Students and visitors today still see the original layout that once aimed to connect learning and community life.
Access runs through the main entrance near Chapel Street, from where most buildings can be reached on foot. Visitors interested in the neighboring national park will find paths that lead there from campus and suit short walks.
The observatory built in 1838 ranks among the oldest surviving ones in North America and served early astronomy teaching in the Midwest. A cross from La Rábida monastery, previously shown at the World's Fair in Chicago, now rests in the chapel on campus.
