Whiteford Archeological Site
Whiteford Archeological Site, Archaeological site in Salina, United States.
The Whiteford site is an archaeological area with twelve to fifteen low mounds lying between two rivers. The mounds mark the locations where houses once stood and people lived for many generations.
A homebuilder discovered skeletal remains here in 1873 while constructing a dwelling, sparking interest in the site. Decades later, a husband and wife team conducted organized excavations in the 1930s and carefully recorded what they found.
The burial area reflects the daily life and beliefs of people who made pottery, grinding tools, and stone weapons for hunting and ceremony. These objects show how the community worked and what they valued.
The site sits on private land between two rivers and is closed to visitors at this time. Before planning a visit, contact local authorities or landowners to ask about access or viewing options.
In the 1990s, the burial area was intentionally filled with sand and sealed with concrete to protect the remains for future study. This unusual preservation method shows how experts thought ahead about new technologies that might someday reveal more information.
