Worthy Hotel, Hotel in den Vereinigten Staaten
The Worthy Hotel is an eight-story commercial building at the corner of Main and Worthington streets in Springfield, originally built in 1895 with a steel frame structure. The building was expanded by two additional floors in 1905 and further enlarged in 1909 through an adjacent 1896 building, now functioning as residential apartments.
The hotel was built in 1895 as a Renaissance Revival structure with steel-frame construction, the first of its kind in Springfield, which protected it from fire. Within a decade it expanded, and in 1983 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places for its historical importance.
The hotel was known for its restaurant, considered one of the best in Springfield and a gathering place for local businesspeople. Its architecture with round-arched windows and ornate details represented the commercial style of that era.
The building is located downtown Springfield near the train station and is easily accessible on foot. Since it now functions as residential apartments, you can view the facade and architectural details from the street.
The building was Springfield's first steel-frame structure, serving as a model for fireproof construction during an era of major city fires. Today visitors can still see the distinctive round-arched windows and ornate cornice that reveal its age and former grandeur.
