Wyckoff-Garretson House

The Wyckoff-Garretson House is a colonial structure built in the 1730s from white oak with traditional Dutch architectural features. It displays a distinctive anchorbent frame system that was innovative for its time.

The original structure was built in 1730 by Cornelius Wyckoff, and it was later expanded in 1805 when Samuel Garretson added clapboard siding and new windows. These changes reflect architectural evolution across generations.

Dutch craftsmen from Brooklyn built this house using traditional construction techniques they brought from their homeland. These building methods continue to shape its appearance and character today.

The building is located on South Middlebush Road and functions as a museum with guided tours through its rooms. The location is easy to reach and staff provide insights into colonial life.

The original mortise and tenon joints of the wooden frame remain fully intact, showing the craftsmanship from nearly 300 years ago. These technical details are rarely preserved so well and reveal how people built houses in that era.
