Road Up Raritan Historic District

The Road Up Raritan Historic District is a residential area with nine historic houses spread along River Road, spanning around 2 kilometers. The buildings date from different periods and showcase various architectural styles that developed across generations.

The area developed along a path originally used by the Lenape people, which later became the Assunpink Trail. This route evolved into a key connection between settlements and enabled trade and movement across the region.

The houses display a mix of Italianate, Greek Revival, and Colonial Revival styles, reflecting how tastes and prosperity changed over time. Walking through, you see how each building represents a different chapter in the area's residential story.

The district sits along River Road and can be explored on foot, with houses visible from the street. Visitors should take their time and move slowly to observe the details of each building as they pass through.

The area sits north of Raritan Landing, where an inland port operated during the 1700s, enabling river trade and commerce. This connection to maritime activity shaped the economic life of the community.
