Queen's Bridge, Road bridge across Raritan River in Somerset County, US.
Queen's Bridge is a road bridge spanning the Raritan River in Somerset County, New Jersey, connecting South Bound Brook with Bound Brook. It carries South Main Street across the waterway and sits upon stone piers from around 1875.
The original bridge at this location was completed in 1731 and named after Queen Caroline, wife of King George II of Great Britain. The current steel structure was built in 1984 following multiple reconstructions over the centuries.
The bridge played a role during the American Revolution when General George Washington used it during military operations in January 1777.
This river crossing is freely accessible to vehicles and connects two neighboring communities on opposite banks. Visitors can walk across and get good views of the Raritan River from the structure.
The bridge has a remarkable story of continuity: though rebuilt multiple times and changing from wood to steel, it still sits on the original stone piers from 1875. These old piers are silent witnesses to nearly 150 years of river traffic.
